![]() ![]() Virtually any object in the game can be cut, including vehicles and enemies, though elements of the environment were intentionally limited to structures such as pillars and walls to better facilitate the game. The game's cutting system allows players to engage in melee combat, as well as to precisely slash enemies and objects at will along a geometrical plane using the "free slicing" Blade Mode. Otherwise, secondary weapons can only be obtained after defeating the game's bosses. Raiden can wield sub-weapons such as two kinds of rocket launchers, four kinds of grenades, the iconic cardboard box, an oil drum, and a 3D photo frame. Although Raiden's main weapon is his high-frequency blade, he is not restricted to just that as he can use other replacement blades, sub-weapons or secondary weapons. Unlike previous titles in the Metal Gear series, where players try not to be noticed by enemies, Rising is action-oriented, focusing on sword fighting and a sophisticated cutting system to fight and defeat enemies. The player can alter Raiden's appearance through alternative skins. He is initially playable in his "Standard Body" form, which resembles the body used by Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 4, but with a more natural-looking face. Players assume control of Raiden, a katana-wielding cyborg. The mid-right counter tallies the player's number of hits. The top-left bars indicate Raiden's health and remaining time in Blade Mode. While those involved in the game's production have expressed desire to develop a sequel, such prospects have yet to come to fruition due to the ensuing conflicts between Konami and Kojima Productions. The game also enjoyed positive sales, with the PS3 and Steam versions selling an estimated total of more than 1.2 million copies. Upon its worldwide release in February 2013, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was well received by critics, being praised for its sophisticated cutting system, its use of Metal Gear elements to complement the story despite the game's focus on action, its soundtrack, and its boss fights some criticism was directed at its camera mechanics and the short length of the story mode. The game underwent significant changes in its play mechanics and storyline under PlatinumGames' involvement, although Kojima Productions retained responsibility for the game's overall plot and Raiden's design. The project resurfaced in late 2011 under its finalized title, with PlatinumGames as the new developer. However, the team met with difficulties in developing a game based on swordplay, so supervising director Hideo Kojima postponed its development until a solution could be found. The game was originally being developed internally by Kojima Productions, who announced the game in 2009 under the title of Metal Gear Solid: Rising. The series' usual stealth elements are also optional to reduce combat. Through the use of Blade Mode, Raiden can cut cyborgs in slow motion and steal parts stored in their bodies. The gameplay focuses on fighting enemies using a sword and other weapons to perform combos and counterattacks. In the game, the player controls returning Metal Gear character Raiden as he confronts a private military company that wants to destabilize peaceful nations for profit. It is a spin-off in the Metal Gear series, set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013, Windows and OS X in January and September 2014, and Nvidia Shield TV in January 2016. As for USRA, this Mikado is a solid base to create other locomotives such as the Heavy Pacific, Light/Heavy Mountain, etc. I was able to procure another mesh for a different locomotive as well. Looking to do the PRR, B&O, NYC, UP, NKP, and C&O. My Early ALCO pack is going to be sidelined for a moment while I build out the Mikados. Thing is this model came out of left field, and I'm glad it did! So what's actually in the pipe? More USRA types. So this is a bit of a departure of what I originally said at the end of the Hudsons. The nice part is during this time a lot of locomotives used very similar parts so using mesh that is already done, and tweaking them to fit the needs of this model was a breeze! Cisco for providing me the Bettendorf trucks with some edits. This helped significantly with timing and movement of this model.īeyond Scott Brunner this is also a mash up of my models, and Meatballhero's meshes. Thank you very much for providing a solid foundation to build off of. With taking the model as a solid base I transformed and updated it significantly to almost a brand new model well practically. I want to thank Scott Brunner - This locomotive model was originally made for open rails. These locomotives are excellent in freight work and mountain passenger service. At the conclusion of the war the name Mikado soon returned. During the second world war the railroads started referring to the mikado's as MacArthur's after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A total of 625 light Mikado's were built during the time of the USRA's tenure with 641 being built afterwards. They worked all the way until the diesels started taking over. The mikado type locomotive was the most numerous across the country. The current number of locomotives and rolling stock was augmented by new production of up-to-date and standardized types/designed to be the best that could be produced to replace outdated equipment.Įnter the USRA Light Mikado! These locomotives were considered well designed, modern, and successful. A reduction in passenger service occurred to help with decongestion of freight. All the railroads were organized into 3 divisions, East, West, and South. They introduced standardized locomotive and rail car classes known as the USRA Standard.Ĭhanges occurred quickly as once President Wilson issued the order for nationalization. This lasted from December of 1917 to March of 1920. During the first world war the federal government enacted the USRA as an experiment to nationalize the railroads during a wartime emergency. ![]() Added the beans and their cooking water to the rest of the ingredients and let the beans cook the rest of the way to pick up all the flavors. Saved a bit of time by pressure cooking the beans in salted water for ten minutes in my Instant Pot. No food processor so went with small dice, which worked fine. The flavor was still fabulous Parmesan rind makes a big difference. I couldn’t get a ham hock so we kept it vegetarian. A few modifications: I used half leek, half onion. I just left it in the pot.Įxcellent recipe. Made this without the pasta because I forgot to pick some up. Like others, cooked the pasta separately and added to the bowls (easier to freeze w/o pasta). I used pancetta instead of a ham hock because it was what I could find (grandma used pig's feet, but ugh!), and added a couple of tbsp tomato paste to the veggies after they were sauteed and caramelized it, then followed the recipe. A little different than my grandma's pasta e fagioli, but still delicious. I used navy beans but think I’ll go with the suggested cannellini beans next time as they are bit more hefty. Plus, all that work of cooking down the soffrito is totally worth it. It is incredibly seasoned with the addition of the Parmesan rind and ham hock. The dreaded crusty bread should be avoided, though. I liked how the saltiness of the soup □ and the softness of the pasta was delicious. We make it as described except we use canned cannellini beans and add chicken stock to make up for the liquid. My partner and I just call this “The Soup”. Top with Parmesan, drizzle with oil, and sprinkle with red pepper flakes. The noodles will absorb all the available liquid and the liquid will be thick and gummy.) Step 5ĭivide soup among bowls. Return meat to soup discard bone and any large pieces of fat. Remove ham hock and use a fork to pull meat off the bone. Cook soup with lid askew, adding water (or stock, if you have it) as needed to keep beans submerged by 1", until beans are very tender, 1–3 hours, depending on size and age of beans. Reduce heat to medium-low and bring to a gentle simmer. Bring to a boil, then add Parmesan rinds (if using) and bay leaves. Step 3Īdd beans and their soaking liquid, tomatoes, and kale season with salt and pepper. Add ham hock and cook, uncovered, stirring and scraping bottom of pot every 5 minutes, until soffritto is starting to brown in places and has lost at least half of its volume, about 10 minutes more. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover pot, and cook, stirring every 5 minutes or so and reducing heat if mixture starts to brown, until vegetables are softened and juicy, about 15 minutes. The goal at this stage is to slow cook the soffritto until the vegetables are very soft but have not taken on any color. Add chopped vegetables, season generously with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring often, until vegetables start to sweat out some of their liquid, about 4 minutes. Heat ⅓ cup oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium. Pulse carrots, leek, and garlic in a food processor until finely chopped. As soon as the water comes to a boil, remove pot from heat, stir in a palmful of salt, cover pot, and let beans sit 1 hour. If you haven’t soaked the beans, do a power soak: Place beans in a large pot, cover with water by 1", and bring to a boil over high heat. ![]() Though able to mimic rudimentary sounds of speech in order to draw forth their prey, they are not thought to be especially intelligent beings. It’s also musically superior to “Drivers Licence”, which was carried by its emotional authenticity but wasn’t a particularly good song to listen to. If the last one was a good encapsulation of teenage melodrama, this is at least as good an encapsulation of teenage bitchiness, and it’s fucking funny. Samson Savill de Jong: This is just delightfully catty. As the expurgation of the feelings of someone in the throws of believing they are the first to ever be burned in this way, it is - gossip-baiting aside - sharp. The smirking self-satisfaction is more feature than bug, and more maladaptive pain than satisfaction in the first place. Scott Mildenhall: It’s more daring to sound bitter than it is broken, not least as it’s less likely to be embraced, but that’s what makes “Deja Vu” more interesting than “Drivers License”. In doing so, she transforms a diary of private insecurities into what all the best break-up songs are: a socially sanctioned display of righteous pettiness. Thankfully, Rodrigo leaves it up to the listener to dwell on the heavier stuff, while she instead keeps the show rolling with her shoutalong vocals and scuzzy synth lines and sly interjections of attitude. Maybe those cute but dorky date activities were never the product of a genuine, unmediated attachment maybe all it was, all it could ever be, was a scripted performance. Rodrigo jabs at this ideal when she points out that both she and the other woman are actresses, a casual aside that uncorks a world of meaning. The main villain here is not really the ex, but the teenage veneration of uniqueness and authenticity, an ideal which can seem like the most important thing in the world until you run up against its obvious limits. Can you really criticize a song for sounding too much like Lorde or Taylor Swift or the bedroom pop artist of your choice, when it contains the lyric “she thinks it’s special, but it’s all reused”? But this metatextual armor wouldn’t hold up as well if the song weren’t so structurally cohesive and thematically sure of itself. Taylor Alatorre: The smartest thing about “Deja Vu” is that its subject matter hands it an automatic defense mechanism. Here’s hoping pop radio has no trouble with the distorted guitar bit on the outro. But the Antonoff-indebted production clatters and tumbles, and the backing vocals alternate between taunts and encouragements. But instead, the main emotion is just “loud.”Īlfred Soto: I cringed when she cooed/coyed her way through the first chorus as much as she uses a memory about “Uptown Girl” as reflexive commentary on her own songwriting. Likewise, I kind of wish it was a bit more angry? It feels like there should be some real anger behind this. Like I said, it lives and dies on all the details. But I kind of wish the song was a bit… more. ![]() And hey, it doesn’t sound as aggressively store-brand Lorde as “Drivers License” did. It’s all very aggressively teenage in the same way that “Drivers License” is. Strawberry ice cream, sharing jackets, playing a Billy Joel song (that honestly I’m not entirely sure why he’s playing to begin with, “Uptown Girl” isn’t one of his piano songs, Olivia). Katie Gill: This song lives and dies on all the little details. I have fun every time I listen to it, despite being far away from dramatic teen relationships, and continue to enjoy watching Rodrigo blossom as a songwriter. The production is occasionally a little cutesy (the background “ha-ha-ha”s, “singing in harmony” kicking in with another voice) but those are minor quibbles. It’s delightfully petty (something I revel in, even as I close in on 30) and cathartic beyond words. I love how Rodrigo turns this on its head by being vitriolic at her uncreative ex rather than the new person they’re dating. You end up wondering how important you were in the first place. But logic never factors into my feelings, and it feels like a giant betrayal when you share vulnerable slices of yourself with someone only for them to take those and appropriate them for their next relationship. Rodrigo reminds me why I love pop music.Īlex Clifton: You can’t own an experience, like playing someone your favourite Taylor Swift song for the first time or showing them your secret spot in the library where you get a view of campus from the third floor. I would be jealous of this zoomer if it wasn’t for the fact that I just love pop music. This feels like the jokey-quirky cousin to “Drivers License” and the summer deserves it. Its release from the tension of the verse breaks my heart a little. Pharrell Williamsĭede Akolo: The drum breakdown was what sold me. Included on the second disc was "Dog Shit," two and a half minutes of perhaps the most bizarre, scatological ODB ranting that had yet appeared on record. With the concurrent success of the other Wu solo projects, anticipation for the group's second album ran high, and when the double-disc Wu-Tang Forever came out in the summer of 1997, it sold over 600,000 copies in its first week of release. Additionally, his guest spot on a remix of Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" produced one of the year's unlikeliest hitmaking teams. The stellar singles "Brooklyn Zoo" and "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" both became hits, making the album a gold-selling success. Earlier in the year, Ol' Dirty had been convicted of second-degree assault in New York, the only violent offense ever proven against him trouble continued to stalk him in 1994, when he was shot in the stomach by another rapper in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn following a street argument.nnLuckily, the injuries weren't serious, and Dirty became the second Wu-Tang member to launch a solo career (after Method Man) when he signed with Elektra and released the RZA-produced Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version in early 1995. Buoyed by the RZA's production genius and a number of strong personalities, the Wu-Tang Clan's first album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), was released at the end of 1993 and became one of the most influential rap albums of the decade. The Wu grew into an innovatively structured hip-hop collective designed to hit big and then spin off as many solo careers for its members as possible. The trio parlayed their obsessions into founding the Wu-Tang Clan, renaming themselves Ol' Dirty Bastard (since there was no father to his style), the RZA, and the Genius, respectively. As he got older, he started hanging out more and more with his cousins Robert Diggs and Gary Grice they all shared a taste for rap music and kung-fu movies. Despite being sentenced to prison on drug charges in 2001, it's worth noting that while he was running amuck Ol' Dirty's offenses were largely nonviolent the saddest part of his story is that, in the end, the only person he truly harmed was himself.nnOl' Dirty Bastard was born Russell Tyrone Jones in Brooklyn in 1969, and grew up in the neighborhood of Fort Green as a welfare child. It was difficult for observers to tell whether ODB's wildly erratic behavior was the result of serious drug problems or genuine mental instability bad luck certainly played a role in his downfall, but so did his own undeniably poor judgment. Sadly, his life inevitably slipped out of control, and the possibility that his continued antics were at least partly the result of conscious image-making disappeared as time wore on. At first, his difficulties with the law made him a larger-than-life figure, the ringmaster of rap's most cartoonish sideshow. ODB spent much of 19 getting arrested with ridiculous, comical frequency, building up a rap sheet that now reads not so much like a soap opera as an epic Russian novel. Unfortunately, after launching a successful solo career, his personal life began to exhibit those same qualities. Delivering his outrageously profane, free-associative rhymes in a distinctive half-rapped, half-sung style, ODB came across as a mix of gonzo comic relief and not-quite-stable menace. One of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, who recorded some of the most influential hip-hop of the '90s, Ol' Dirty Bastard was the loose cannon of the group, both on record and off. ![]() Kondo’s advice is to get rid of them, and her faith in keeping only the things that “bring us joy” addresses the economic concept of opportunity cost: The mental and physical toll of keeping an unused item around is greater than throwing it out. In my tidying efforts, I find that the sunk-cost fallacy hits harder for new items, because unused items retain more value in resale. The irrationality of this thinking is that people ignore whether an item they own is still useful to them, and whether they’ll actually use or resell it. The money’s spent, an investment has been made, and it makes people irrational because it seems a waste to not use something that one has poured resources into. The term “sunk cost” applies to payments (of time or money) that have already occurred and thus can’t be recovered. In other words, I think the reason Kondo-mania continues is because she has actually hit upon some good solutions to deal with these pervasive mental fallacies.įor example, Kondo aptly attacks what’s called the sunk-cost fallacy. She takes strong stances against these irrational mental habits that govern us. In my reading and practice of the eponymous “KonMari Method,” I found that Kondo does implictly touch on some important behavioral economics concepts and cognitive biases that prevent us from being tidy. Harford says that the clutter that piles up in apartments is a product of people’s cognitive blunders. Financial Times columnist Tim Harford agrees that Kondo’s methods are not only intuitive, but compelling to economists. Seeing as an entire branch of economics studies exactly that, it’s no wonder that economists have a particular interest in her advice. Running through Kondo’s best advice and most of her book is the argument about the anxiety-induced limits of human decision-making. Why do people have so much trouble throwing things out? Turns out, the answer lies in people’s heads. Most wouldn’t even notice if some of those items are gone, she argues, but the problem is that throwing things out and putting belongings in the right place requires jumping through some psychological hoops. This number is astonishing, but a key element of Kondo’s argument is that hardly anyone is aware of how many items he or she owns. In the introduction of her book (and several times throughout), Kondo quantifies the power of her advice-she estimates that she’s helped her clients (a group that doesn’t include her countless readers) dispose of no fewer than a million items. During Kondo’s AMA on Reddit, one superfan asked her how to teach her method to children under 10. ![]() A good number of journalists swear by her methods, and effusive referrals of “ She changed my life” abound. (A search for her name in Japanese produces a similar result, though her book was originally published in 2010.) If Google searches are any indication, interest in tidying is also at an all-time high, and some of this interest must be attributed to the rise in Kondo’s method-which is to hold onto only items that “bring joy.” Following the purge, Kondo provides clear directions for how to store all your belongings in a way that makes them easily accessible and hard to mess up. Though Kondo’s book was published in English in October of last year, a search on Google Trends still puts interest in her near an all-time high. Unlike most self-help books, there are no extraneous words, no pandering-the lack of “wink wink” gesturing reads as an appealing, authentic statement. Direct and devoid of clutter, this sentence rings true to her philosophy. This is the ambitious first sentence of Marie Kondo’s best-selling manifesto, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. “In this book, I have summed up how to put your space in order in a way that will change your life forever.” A programmable timed feeder like the PetSafe 5 comaprtment one could be used but I don't know how a prey model raw diet would work for it. Raw food shouldn't be left out all day anyways. Ritz, raw food would't work with a gravity feeder. I don't know if these feeders keep dry food from becoming stale or to go bad. Or, before you do that give the feeder a thorough cleaning with soap and water. Fill it once and when the food level is tray kevel, fill the feeder again. It is typically divided into four sections which are display, vertical controllers, horizontal controllers. These feeders don't need to be kept filled to the top with dry food all the time. The CRO stands for a cathode ray oscilloscope. Bacteria from the cat's saliva will get all over the food and the tray and mold and other thigns can grow whch may make a cat sick. The tray part should be cleaned daily and any food in the tray thrown out. The hole that the food falls through is fairly big.
